Freaky Frugal Halloween  by Rachel Webb

Retailers love Halloween. Kids love Halloween, but what about parents? With early preparation and frugal shopping, Halloween can be a relaxing holiday and a wonderful opportunity for families to spend quality time together. An online poll at Halloween Magazine shows that Moms are spending anywhere from $50 - $250 yearly buying costumes and decorating the house. How can you enjoy a freaky Halloween and still be frugal?

COSTUMES Be creative and involve the whole family. Start by looking at your resources and work with what you have. Jan in Mapleton, Utah used her resources by dressing her children in her husband's UPS uniforms from work. The parents were the packages wearing big boxes with "handle with care" and "fragile" stickers. They were the hit of the neighborhood!

Since I have small children I try to purchase or make costumes that can be used for other purposes like Princess themed birthday parties or use storybook characters for school dress-up days, etc.

Remember to check out online auctions and goodwill stores for costume ideas. Clearance Sales are my favorite. http://www.Partysupermarket.com is an online store that gathers clearance items from several stores around the country and sells online for $4.99!

FRUGAL DECORATIONS Carve an Amazing "Graveside Manner" Pumpkin jack-o-lantern using the FREE pattern found at: http://www.pumpkinmasters.com/freepattern.html.

Try dressing up a scarecrow and have it up a few days prior to Halloween so the whole neighborhood gets used to seeing him as a fixture…then substitute a real person dressed as a scarecrow Halloween night!

Another cheap trick - Throughout the yard, dig up small shovels of grass, then remove and save a little of the dirt . Next fill the empty holes with grocery bags and put the sod back on top. When Trick-or-Treater's walk on it they feel like the ground is moving!

TRICK-OR-TREAT BUCKET Save your 1-Gallon plastic ice-cream buckets, let the kids decorate them with markers or with adult help, paint on eyes with glow in the dark paint!

The best way to enjoy a frugal and freaky holiday is to Plan Ahead, be Creative and look for unusual resources as an alternative to spending money!

Romance Tip
For the month of October, I challenge all of you love birds to sit down with your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend and come up with your relationship high and low for the day.  For example,  today my relationship high was when my dh told me that I looked beautiful in the shirt I was wearing.  My relationship low was when we had a misunderstanding over breakfast this morning.

When the two of you talk about what you disliked don't criticize each other.  Just try to come up with a way that you could do things differently next time.  Also, talking about what you like about your partner really helps us to know what to do more often to make each other feel good.

This exercise really opens up the lines of communication.  Try it out!  It is a lot of fun.    ~LH~

Do you have a romantic story to share?  How about a tip guaranteed to spice up your love life?  If so contact lashawna@viclink.com.  She'd love to hear from you.

Recipe
BBQ ribs the lazy way!

Not enough time? Prepare this in the morning and let it slow cook throughout the day! By dinnertime the meat is so soft, it melts in your mouth!

2-3 LBS boneless pork ribs
1 TBSP cooking oil
1 medium onion, diced
6 cloves garlic
2 jars BBQ sauce

Barely brown ribs with oil in dutch oven or frying pan (don't cook them through) Add onion, garlic and BBQ sauce. Put in slow cooker for 4-8 hours, stirring occasionally. Or place in 350 oven for an hour and turn heat to warm for 2-7 hours.

Fantastic with rice and pineapple!

Craft Corner

Fun (& Easy) to Make Spiders

This one is great for Halloween.  You will need to gather the following for each spider you make:
1-4in Styrofoam ball
4-1in Styrofoam balls
2-googly eyes
8-long black pipe cleaners
black acrylic paint
scraps of felt in red and pink
white craft glue
serrated knife
candle
paint brush

Once you have all your items, cover an area with newspaper and begin.  First, cut the small Styrofoam balls in half using a waxed knife.  Then, paint the large ball and small half balls with the black paint.  Let them dry.  Once they are dry, you can finish your spider. Glue on the googly eyes and cut a mouth out of the red felt and glue it into place as well.  You can add rosy cheeks using the pink felt if you choose.  Then, to finish it off, poke a holes in the large Styrofoam ball where the legs will go.  Add a drop of glue down each hole and push the pipe cleaners into place.  On the ends of the pipe cleaners, glue the half balls of Styrofoam so your little spider has feet.  Viola!  You now have an adorable spider to add to your Halloween decorations.

Variations:  Try experimenting with different colors of paint.  Make green or brown spiders.  Or, get some glow in the dark paint and see what happens.  Have Fun!
