Impressions of Nature: Good for Spring, Summer and Fall. Go on a nature hike around your home. Have your child collect leaves, flowers (flat ones work best) and weeds. Once home, have your child capture the impression of their finds in various ways. Some ideas are: playdough or clay press - gently press your leaf or flower into a flattened piece of playdough or clay and rub gently with a fingertip to capture the small details;. paper and crayon impressions - place a leaf or flower under a thin piece of white paper and use the side of a crayon to rub over the object picking up all the details; tinfoil pressings - lay a piece of foil over your nature find and gently press out the shape with your fingers. Finishing Touches: If you choose the dough option, pick out your favorite and let it set out for a couple of days until it gets hard. It might make a nice paper weight. If you opt for the foil or paper methods, cut out the impression and glue it to bright colored paper for a nice wall hanging.
Sweet Summer Fun: You guessed it. This ones for Summer. Hand out slices of watermelon. Maybe you could even get your kids to try to guess how many seeds they will find in their slice. Collect the seeds on a paper towel and let them dry. When the seeds are dry, have your kids make "watermelons" by using pink and green paper and gluing the seed onto the "watermelon." Even more fun: Have your kids have a watermelon seed spitting contest. Or, plant the left over seeds and watch them grow.
